A bevy of burlesque and cabaret bad girls don their blue stockings to take over Jacksons Lane with an irreverent blend of humour and sass.

“A wild joyride of cultural subversion” Erotic Review

The Blue Stocking Society is a modern-day women’s institute for showgirls who like their satire with lashings of sauce and their striptease spiced with razor-sharp wit. Inspired by the 18th century literary society of the same name, the 21st Century bluestockings have been hosting their boisterous evenings of cabaret and burlesque for the last two years, to great acclaim.

“A highly entertaining night…extremely funny.” One Stop Arts.

Heading up the bill are the Blue Stocking Society co-founders, burlesque clown Audacity Chutzpah, AKA Madam Secretary, and cheeky diva Tricity Vogue, AKA Madam Treasurer.

They are joined by illustrious bluestocking alumni, including the notorious Ophelia Bitz (AKA Madam Whip), bawdy ukulele songstress Ria Lina, music hall vaudevillian Shirley Windmill, slapstick showgirl Ginger Blush and witty burlesque trickster Laurie Hagen

The show’s designer is the brilliant Mr Mistress.

“Quirky cabaret, mirthful songs and the notorious raffle.” The Londonist

For those who enjoy burlesque with brains, the bluestockings welcome you to join their own wayward spin on a women’s institute for the night. You may even win a prize in the tombola – but it might not be one you can show your gran…

ABOUT THE BLUE STOCKING SOCIETY www.thebluestockingsociety.co.uk

Chutzpah and Vogue founded the Blue Stocking Society in April 2010 as an impish – and literal – modern take on the 18th century gatherings of the same name. Originally a soiree for society ladies rebelliously interested in using their brains, despite the slur on their femininity, the 21st century cabaret version revels in the mischievous juxtaposition of female intelligence and sex appeal, often with uproariously entertaining results.

Celebrated cabaret sorority makes its West End debut for International Women’s Day

The clever showgirls of London cabaret collective The Blue Stocking Society celebrate all that’s good and bad-ass about womankind with a West End edition of their London Cabaret Award nominated show, just in time for International Women’s Day.

“A wild joyride of cultural subversion” Erotic Review

A sparkling line-up of burlesque and cabaret mavens will light up the stage at 7 on Red’s Covent Garden venue, as the Women’s Institute for Bad Girls comes to town. Tongue-in-cheek femininity rubs shoulders with disobedient raunch in a riotous party for women who like to think – and play – outside the box.

“London’s most celebrated sorority” Time Out London Critics’ Choice

Featuring special guests:

ABI COLLINS

After expelling herself from The Royal Ballet School, pint-sized comedy powerhouse Abigail Collins has become one of the leading lights on the London Cabaret circuit. Whether dancing Swan Lake on traffic cones as her Russian diva Katinka, or hooping up a storm as Angel Rodriguez, Brooklyn’s answer to Beyoncé, Abigail’s work is skillful, sexy and very, very silly. The physique of an athlete and the mouth of Joan Rivers – what’s not to love?!

“In your face comedy” The Mercury (Australia)

“An absolute star” Angus Mackechnie, Royal National Theatre

LAURIE HAGEN

Originally from Belgium, Laurie is an actress who took her first steps in the Cabaret and Burlesque world as one of Miss Polly Rae’s Hurly Burly Girlies in 2007. She’s been flying solo for a good few years now but still enjoys the occasional double-the-trouble act. Miss Hagen is the Folly Mixtures’ resident host at Madame Jojo’s.

“Her infectious enthusiasm and smile make her endearing from the start, even when telling a slightly reluctant spectator he is now her slave.”

Erotic Review

OOH LA LOU

Ooh La Lou has been having fun in the world of burlesque and cabaret for six years. She is a lynch-pin of London’s burlesque troupe ‘The Folly Mixtures’, and was proud to be part of ‘The Hurly Burly Show’ for its sell-out West End run last year at The Garrick Theatre. She’s just returned from taking the show to Sydney Australia. Her comedic modern twist on burlesque has been described by Burlesque Beat as “half Britney half Goldie Hawn” – which adds up to fabulous entertainment.

 “A stand-out” Official London Theatre

With Bluestocking co-founders:

AUDACITY CHUTZPAH

Madam Secretary, Blue Stocking Society

London Cabaret Awards 2012 Short-listed Nominee and Tournament of Tease 2008 winner Audacity Chutzpah has performed her own incomparable style of burlesque on countless stages across the UK and internationally. Her wickedly sharp sense of humour means her acts offer true titillation for body and mind. Audacity is also the creator and performer of solo clown show Waiting For Stanley, a poignantly hilarious take on women’s experiences in World War Two.

TRICITY VOGUE

Madam Treasurer, Blue Stocking Society

One of London’s best-loved quirky divas, ukulele-toting Tricity Vogue has been putting her own offbeat twist on vintage jazz glamour for the last eight years. As well as painting herself blue for her highly original and “refreshingly bizarre” solo cabaret show, The Blue Lady Sings, she also hosts and runs her much-loved Ukulele Cabaret in London and at the Edinburgh Fringe, fronts a hot 20s swing band, and has a secret double life as an award-winning scriptwriter.

“Anything can happen at the emancipated ensemble’s monthly gatherings” Erotic Review

(Dis)order! (Dis)order! The Blue Stockings International Smothering Sunday Special takes place on Thursday March 31st in the hallowed surroundings of The Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club. Las Vegas veteran and non-reformed alcoholic Peggy-Sued (aka Abi Collins) will be grinding the rod of office as this month’s Madam Chairperson, presiding over a carefully selected line-up of too-hot-to-handle talent.
Blue Stocking’s Madam Treasurer and cabaret virtuosa Tricity Vogue will provide saucy, sardonic songs and ukulele, while Madam Secretary Audacity Chutzpah will be raising the Burlesque ante with the world premiere of an all new double-act with the delicious Miss Ginger Blush. Expect in-your-face naughty, nasty and niceness from Vendetta Vain, described by The Scotsman as “somewhere between a crack addict and a blow up doll”. She’s sure to push your buttons, political or otherwise.
Throw into the Moulinex Russia’s most celebrated Prima Ballerina Madam Galina, opera from German chanteuse Tamara Stein and a supremely comic burlesque from Rose Thorne, plus fun and games, the exalted Blue Stockings raffle, all the tea and cake you can shake and vac at, and a fully stocked bar at Working Women’s prices, and you have one hell of a celebration.
All for the recession-proof price of £7.00 on the door (£5.00 if booked in advance).
Can flesh and feminism co-exist? Come see for yourself. We promise to tickle your fancy, hit your funny bone and provide a night of unforgettable, thought-provoking entertainment. Absolutely EVERYBODY welcome. Well, maybe not the Pope… but we wouldn’t stop him if he really did want to come. As long as he bought a ticket for the raffle.
